As travelers, we have the privilege of experiencing new places and having great adventures. But for some people, every day is a struggle for food and water. That’s why we’re working closely with the Alameda County Community Food Bank to help fight hunger this holiday season.

Our staff will be collecting much-needed food items all month, and today we’re hosting an office-wide bake sale to help raise additional money for the food bank. The most needed items this year are rice, pasta, canned fruits and veggies, tuna, peanut butter and cereal. In 2009, the Alameda County Community Food Bank distributed 18.3 million pounds of food—including 8.7 million pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables.

There are food banks across the country, and all are in need of donations this season—and throughout the year. We urge our readers (if it’s economically feasible) to consider making a donation to their local food bank. If you’d like to help the Moon team, make a donation to our virtual food drive. Moon is listed under Avalon/Seal/Publishers Group West. Avalon Travel publishes Moon Travel Guides.

Our friend in travel, Rick Steves, is also working hard this season to raise money for Bread for the World—and he’s giving away some special gifts to those who donate $100 or more. To learn more, visit this page.

All of us at Moon wish you a happy holiday season—and many exciting travel adventures in 2011!
