Shopping in Lihu‘e is best explored in the main shopping centers. This is because much of the town serves daily functional needs, so quaint independent boutiques aren’t as common here as on other parts of the island. Yet Lihu‘e is the best spot for mall shopping and to find the best hiking and beach gear.
In Lihu‘e’s largest shopping center, you will find an array of stores. Kukui Grove Shopping Center has department stores such as Macy’s and Kmart. Deja Vu Surf Hawaii provides extensive surf gear and clothing. Several jewelry stores can be found here, along with a GameStop for the kids and a few salons. The center is located at 3-2600 Kaumualii Highway and you can’t miss it. There are some basic eateries. The shopping center is open 9:30am-7pm Monday-Thursday and on Saturday. Friday it opens at the same time but closes at 9pm, and on Sundays it’s open 10am-6pm.
Historic Kilohana Plantation (3-2087 Kaumuali‘i Hwy., 808/245-5608, 10:30am-9:30pm Mon.-Sat., 10:30am-3pm Sun.) holds a nice selection of shops with art, knickknacks, hand-made items, clothing, and other island-style products.
The shops can be found on both levels of the house and include Grande’s Gems and Gallery, offering jewelry with Tahitian black pearls, opals, tanzanite, and other unique items. At Sea Reflections you can find unique objects from the sea as well as Hawaiian shells.
The Artisans Room on the lower level of the house is decorated with work from local artists. Originals, prints, and sculptures can all be found here. A popular shop is Clayworks at Kilohana, a working ceramics gallery. Browse work by local artists or take a workshop and clay-making class yourself. The Hawaiian Collection Room has an array of intriguing island finds, like Ni‘ihau shell lei, Hawaiian collectibles, and local jewelry and gifts.
