Alaska, Seattle, and New York City from a Kid's Perspective

Last week, I shared with you several tips for traveling with children, which might prove to be helpful for those planning a family vacation. Admittedly, they weren't my personal suggestions – after all, I don't have kids of my own and rarely travel with others' offspring. Instead, the tips represented the collective advice of Brandon Rudd, the publisher of Cooper's Pack Travel Guides, a relatively new travel book series for children. As I mentioned in my last post, Brandon didn't actually start traveling until he was 30 years old. As a result, he's developed a passion for helping younger generations travel the globe and have fun with their parents and siblings in new cities, states, and countries. more >>

Five Tips for Traveling with Kids

During last week's visit to Yellowstone National Park, I noticed an assortment of travelers, from retired couples to twentysomething recreationists to families with small children. In fact, while snowshoeing with my new acquaintance, Rick Hoeninghausen, amid the lovely Mammoth Hot Springs Terraces, I passed a family of four: a mother, a father, an eager little boy, and an already pooped little girl. In her defense, the trail was pretty steep, but still, seeing the girl's unhappy expression prompted me to remember my own vacations as a kid. Although most of my memories are incredibly positive, I, too, had my trying moments – such as the time I almost had a nervous breakdown at the Smithsonian, after realizing that I couldn't possibly see all the exhibits on display during the measly three days that Mom had scheduled for our stop in Washington, D.C. more >>

As I mentioned in my most recent post, I spent last week on a press trip in and around Yellowstone National Park, and although I had a wonderful time in the frigid North and embraced the chance to encounter new places and new faces, I admit that, as expected, I found myself missing my normal traveling companions (my husband, Dan, and my kitty, Ruby) and longing for my typical mode of transportation (our trusty mini-van). Don't get me wrong – our little group of writers and guides spent a lot of time on the road, traveling in an array of durable shuttles and snowcoaches – but getting from New Orleans, Louisiana, to Bozeman, Montana, and back again obviously required a few, time-saving plane rides. more >>

Avoiding the Typical Pitfalls of Spring Break Travel

Tomorrow morning, I'm taking an early flight to Bozeman, Montana, after which I'll be spending the bulk of this week in and around Yellowstone National Park – which I've never before had the delight of exploring in the wintertime. To say that I'm excited about this particular trip would be an understatement, and yet, at the same time, I'm feeling both a little nervous and a little sad. more >>
