US Pride Events 2011

rainbow-flag.jpg

Pride parades and events celebrating queer life have sprung up all over the country, spreading joy and love across the land. Most pride events occur annually in June to commemorate the Stonewall riots, a pivotal moment in the modern LGBT rights movement, though it is possible to find pride events throughout the summer months and even into October.

Here is just a sampling of upcoming pride events.

Atlanta, Georgia
The city of Atlanta holds its Pride Festival in the fall (October 8 & 9 in Piedmont Park, this year), but continues to commemorate the Stonewall Riots with several events June 18-26, like the East Point Possums Show, Georgia Equality’s Evening for Equality, and the Sylvia Rivera Stonewall Community Event. See the Atlanta Pride website for more details. more >>

Summertime Thrills (part 2)

roller-coaster-loop.jpg

Yesterday I posted a list of great wooden roller coasters in the U.S. Today I want to talk about steel roller coasters. Until 1959 the world only knew wooden roller coasters. And along came Walt.

In 1959, Disneyland’s Matterhorn Bobsled Ride was the world’s first tubular steel-tracked roller coaster. With steel, roller coaster designers were able to build twists, turns, loops, and other thrills that just weren’t possible with wooden coasters. more >>

Summertime Thrills (part 1)

Roller Coasters. What began as a simple car that rolled down a hill has evolved into an engineering marvel. Roller coasters are bigger, faster, and more thrilling than ever.

Thanks to amusement parks and theme parks that kick off their summer seasons beginning Memorial Day weekend, I can sneak away for a day for this quintessential summertime thrill even if I can’t get away for a full-blown vacation.

Whether you like wooden or steel coasters, an out-and-back, dueling, mad mouse, or twister track, there’s a coaster for you.

Today’s topic, an oldie and still a goodie, wooden roller coasters. Check back tomorrow for the steel coasters.

Guest Post: Experiencing Guatemala’s Best on a Budget

By Al Argueta

It’s no secret that Guatemala is a favorite budget destination. What seems to have eluded the collective consciousness is that it’s really close to the U.S. If I had a dollar for every time someone reacted with surprise upon learning that the flight from Houston or Miami to Guatemala City is just two-and-a-half hours, well let’s just say I could take this trip with the money. more >>
