New 2009 Travel Requirements Begin Today

Changes to current U.S. travel requirements begin today, and we wanted to make sure our readers are informed.

Currently all individuals traveling by air outside the U.S. are required to present a passport or approved travel document to enter/re-enter the U.S. from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean. Beginning today, the requirement will be extended to those also traveling by land and sea.

The new requirement is part of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, which is overseen by the U.S. Departments of State and Homeland Security. For more information, see the State Department Summary.

The government is encouraging people traveling between these regions to review the policy on the U.S. Government's official WHTI website. more >>

Want to Delay the Real World?

There’s only a few days left to submit an application for the Delaying the Real World Fellowship co-sponsored by Avalon Travel, the parent company of Moon.

Each year one twenty-something is awarded a $5,000 grant to complete a life changing adventure, and delay the 9-5 grind. Past ideas include creating a community service project, building houses in a Mexican village, writing and producing a play, and working to help Cambodian children obtain bicycles so they can get to school.

The fellowship is inspired by the Running Press book, Delaying the Real World, by Colleen Kinder. The book encourages recent college grads to think outside the cubicle and try something truly unique. more >>

What Makes a Road Trip a Road Trip?

With the summer road tripping season starting I have a question for you.

A couple weeks ago I drove the 230 or so miles up to Humboldt County for my sister's college graduation. When I mentioned the trip to a friend she exclaimed "Road trip!" and I was thoroughly confused because for me, this was not a road trip.

Why would one person consider this a road trip and another not? Was it because I didn't stop at any of the kitschy roadside attractions like Trees of Mystery, the Drive-Thru Tree, or Confusion Hill? (Which by-the-way has some serious road construction happening just south of the entrance on Hwy. 101.) Was it because I wasn't going a distance that required multiple days of driving? Was it because I make this trip 3 - 4 times each year? more >>
