Belize Book Giveaway and Live Chat: 3pm EST Friday

booksbelize2012-25.jpg

I'll be donning my @tranquilotravel twitter hat on Friday, January 5, 2012, for a live chat about traveling in Belize, one of the most interesting, richest, wildest corners of the Mundo Maya. Just throw the #VisitBelize hash tag on your questions and tweet away: Details here.

The chat is at 2 p.m. Belize time (3 p.m. EST). I'm co-hosting with Norbert Figueroa (@globotreks) and looking forward to it. (It's right after my Toastmasters meeting, so I'll try not to be late.) Two random users of the #VisitBelize hash tag will win a copy of MAYA 2012: A Guide to Celebrations in Mexico, Guatemala, Belize & Honduras! more >>

Tourism Bump Projected in Mundo Maya: HuffPo Travel article

berman_huffpo.jpg

My latest column in Huffington Post Travel, “The Maya World Braces For 2012 Apocalypse, Tourism Boom” is about a projected tourism bump to southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, and Honduras. These are the countries and regions which make up the Mundo Maya, a truly unique part of the world which is worthy of all the attention it is sure to get in 2012.

Despite the title of my article (which I did not write), this piece is not about the end times. It is about tourism. It has some pretty photos I took around the Mundo Maya. Nobody I know is "bracing for the apocalypse" but many people I know will welcome a few more visitors this year.

Hopefully, foreigners’ genuine curiosity and interest in the Maya people, culture, and history will result in an economic boost for the people in these regions who can really use it. From the article: more >>

In a Huffington Post Weird News article entitled "Dec. 21, 2012: Will End Of Mayan Calendar Bring Doomsday?" by David Moye, I serve as a voice of reason after a long list of possible apocalypse scenarios. 2012 is expected to be a bigger deal than Y2K when it comes to doomsday-predicting and bunker-building, reports Moye who goes on to discuss people who fear the comet Elenin, solar storms, Planet Nibiru, and unusually fierce weather, all of which have been linked by a few worried souls — without evidence — to the end of the Maya Long Count calendar. more >>

Maya 2012 Story Subject of Juice News Rap

See Video

Trust me, this video is worth 7:37 of your time — it's a nice mix of silly and clever, so turn up your speakers and dig it: RAP NEWS episode 10 from Juice Media begins with numerous references to the Maya and the year 2012, and goes on to address global economic theory, the #occupy movement, and even has Noam Chomsky, a.k.a. "the oracle," doing a cameo interview and rhyme at the end.

From Professor Moonseed at 1:05: "This is the time for humanity's ascension, the fifth sun set in line with precession and the Mayan calendar's prediction, on December 21, this world will rise in unison..." more >>
