New Monument Park in Chiapas, Mexico Honors Maya Calendar and Cuture

See Video

I've just received some fascinating news for travelers headed to the southwest corner of Mexico, in the state of Chiapas. There, a concerted effort to develop the region's cultural tourism potential is underway. Most interesting is the Parque del Chocolate, described by John Major Jenkins in the video above, with its Maya ball court symbolism and alignment with the winter solstice ecliptic.

The proposal is to attract more travelers to the Izapa archaeological zone, which is considered by some to be the birthplace of the Maya long count, with special significance to the December 21, 2012 date, the ending of 13 b'aktuns. more >>

New Inscription of "2012" date in La Corona, Guatemala

Until now, only one reference to December 21, 2012 (the most agreed upon correlation) has ever been discovered. Totuguero Monument 6 bears the famed "13 b'aktun" date and is on display in a museum in Villahermosa, Mexico. Now, at La Corona, a massive archaeological site in northern Guatemala, a second reference has been uncovered.

In this University of Texas at Austin article, "Maya Scholar Deciphers Meaning of Newly Discovered Monument That Refers to 2012," the author says that the new 2012 reference was, rather than prophecy, a way for a troubled king to place his "reign and accomplishments into a larger cosmological framework." more >>

Moon Travel Guides Sponsors 2012 Nomading Film Festival

The bold, pink-on-black welcome banner at the 2012 Nomading Film Festival (NoFF), said it all. The banner hung against century-old brickwork of an enormous youth hostel in upper Manhattan, and declared the reason why several hundred travelers had gathered there on a fine summer day:

“We believe that stories caught on film, while traveling, are some of the most entertaining, educating, beautiful, and authentic. These are stories which should be shared, acknowledged, and awarded. Traveling shapes us. Traveling defines us. Traveling connects us. Welcome to the Nomading Film Festival.” more >>

"Mayan Renaissance" film screening in Arvada, Colorado

maya_film.jpg

A new feature length documentary film, “Mayan Renaissance”, treats "the glory of the ancient Maya civilization, the Spanish conquest in 1519, five hundred years of oppression, and the courageous fight of the Maya to reclaim their voice and determine their own future, in Guatemala and throughout Central America."

The film features Rigoberta Menchu Tum, 1992 Nobel Peace Laureate and Maya leader, and all of the images, voices, expert commentary, and music in the film "come directly from Central America, from the heart of the Mayan world."

There will be a special screening of "Mayan Renaissance" this Sunday in Arvada, Colorado, home of the PeaceJam Foundation which was instrumental in the film's production. more >>
