About the Author

Susanna Henighan Potter

Susanna Henighan Potter never imagined she would settle in the Virgin Islands. Born in Tennessee and raised in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains, she packed her bags after graduating from Oberlin College and headed to a cluster of tiny dots in the Caribbean Sea: the Virgin Islands. Susanna began her journalism career at the BVI Beacon, a weekly newspaper in Road Town, Tortola, where she covered everything from regattas to crime. Later, after a stint with the Virgin Island Daily News in St. Thomas, Susanna moved back to Tortola to edit the weekly BVI StandPoint. She also began filing reports for the Associated Press on topics ranging from international finance to the installation of the first traffic light in the British Virgin Islands.

In between writing stories, Susanna fell in love with the islands. She learned to snorkel, went on weekend camping trips, and got used to driving on the left-hand side of the road. She started to read history books about the islands and even learned how to make a piña colada. This guidebook reflects Susanna's experience as both an insider and an outsider—she lives like a local but has not forgotten her first glimpse of the islands from the window of a small airplane in 1999.

Susanna works as a communications professional and lives with her husband on Tortola. She is also the author of Moon Tennessee and Moon Nashville & Memphis.
