ABOUT THE AUTHOR JUSTIN MARLER

Justin MarlerJustin Marler began writing and traveling in the early 1990s in the San Francisco Bay Area. At 19, he joined a prominent alternative rock band, toured extensively, and landed his first publishing deal writing fiction. Before finishing his manuscript, he left conventional life and entered an Eastern Orthodox monastery in Northern California. As a monk he traveled the world over, wrote spiritual texts and travelogues for magazines, and worked in the publishing arm of the monastery.

The Washington Post caught wind of Marler’s life and writings and featured a second-page story on him, which sparked a flurry of mainstream press attention. The end result: He wrote his first full-length book, Youth of the Apocalypse. After seven years spent as a monk, Marler returned to “the world,” where he entered both the music and publishing professions. He fronted an alternative rock band by night and worked as an illustrator at a publishing house by day.

Marler’s first encounter with Austin, Texas was through music. While on a U.S. tour with his band, he made the necessary stop in Austin, performing at famed alternative rock venue Emo’s. Today, Justin lives with his wife and daughter in Austin, where he works as a freelance writer, graphic designer, illustrator, and musician in the band Black Veil Choir.
