Ann Marie Brown first fell in love with the trails of Los Angeles in the early 1980s, as a student at Pomona College in Claremont. During her senior year, she was found more frequently on the slopes of Mount Baldy than in the campus lecture halls. After completing graduate school she settled into a career in publishing, where it quickly became clear that sitting behind a desk was not her strong suit. In 1990 she set out for the California wilderness, with a tape recorder in hand and laptop computer plugged into her Toyota’s cigarette lighter. Now, 15 years later, she is the author of 14 guidebooks and numerous magazine articles about California’s great outdoors. She hikes, bikes, and camps more than 150 days per year in a dedicated effort to avoid routine, complacency, and getting a real job. When she’s not wandering around the Golden State, Ann Marie can be found at her home near Yosemite National Park, with her husband John and golden retriever C.J. A full description of Ann Marie’s books can be seen at www.annmariebrown.com.

Hiking and writing outdoor guidebooks isn’t Julie Sheer’s regular day job, although she often wishes it was. A journalism lifer, Julie’s full-time vocation is assistant graphics editor for national and foreign news at the Los Angeles Times. In her spare time, she writes the Outdoors Institute column for the paper’s Outdoors section. A native Chicagoan, Julie moved to Los Angeles in 1993. She got to know and love the coast and the Santa Monica Mountains, and also experienced natural events—the 1993 Malibu fires and the 1994 Northridge earthquake—that drove other transplants to flee back east. In 1998, she co-authored The Outdoor Getaway Guide for Southern California with her partner Steve Hymon. Julie and Steve remain in the sunny Southland, where they enjoy sneaking off to L.A.’s wild places for hiking, fly fishing, and skiing whenever time allows. They live in Pasadena with their chocolate Labrador retriever Molly, who accompanies them just about everywhere, from the Angeles National Forest to the patio at Peet’s.
