ABOUT THE AUTHOR DAN ELDRIDGE

Formerly a staff editor at Pittsburgh City Paper, Dan’s work has appeared in nearly every Pittsburgh publication, as well as numerous national and international publications, including the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Seattle Magazine and Transitions Abroad. Dan also works as a guidebook author for Lonely Planet and is the founding editor of Young Pioneers, a magazine about independent travel culture and self-improvement that was nominated for an Independent Press Award by Utne Reader in 2004.

A native of the San Francisco Bay Area, Dan Eldridge was raised in a military family and lived in California, Wyoming, Nebraska, and Texas before moving to Western Pennsylvania in 1990. He is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and an alumnus of Semester at Sea, a floating college that circumnavigates the globe and docks at nearly a dozen countries in 100 days.

Before dedicating himself full-time to journalism, Dan worked as a bicycle messenger in San Francisco, a bookseller in New York City, a barista in Seattle, and an English teacher in Istanbul. In Pittsburgh, he’s done time as a taxi driver, a dishwasher, and a telemarketer.

Although technically not a native, Dan now considers Pittsburgh his home. After more than a decade of experiencing the city as both a student and a journalist, he’s come to appreciate this unique corner of America with an even mixture of bewilderment, respect, and awe. He currently splits his time between New York City and Pittsburgh.
