ABOUT THE AUTHORS W.C. MCRAE & JUDY JEWELL

Born and raised on a traditional cattle and sheep ranch in Montana, Bill McRae was brought up with one foot in the saddle. From an early age, his real passion was for the culture of Europe, a taste that evolved from stories of his grandparents’ native Scotland. He made his first trip to the United Kingdom at the age of 18, which awakened a serious urge to travel. This was the 1970s, when much of the world seemed like a well-meaning and courteous place to have a party. And so he did. He used his college years as an excuse to travel, attending universities in England, Scotland, France, Canada, and the United States. He finished his education at the University of Kent, with an MA in Modern Literature. All of this traipsing about didn’t make for much of an academic career, but it was a great education in life.

After university, Bill moved to Portland, OR, which is still his home. Since moving to Portland, Bill has supported his writing habit by working as a university teacher, caterer, journalist, and tile-setter. With his name on various travel guides, including Moon Montana, Moon Oregon, Moon Coastal Oregon, and Moon Zion & Bryce, Bill has also worked as a writer, editor, and contributor for Lonely Planet, Expedia, GORP, National Geographic, and the Mobil Guide series. Between travel-writing junkets, Bill makes his money writing about technology for clients such as Microsoft, Adobe, and Alcatel. You can always interest him in a hand of bridge, a camping trip, or cooking up something French and full of calories.

Judy Jewell was born and raised in Baltimore, MD, where crossing a busy street was a typical outdoor adventure. She moved west right after she broke her right leg falling from a tree house at a camp where she worked. A small cash settlement prompted Judy to buy a cross-country Amtrak pass and relocate to Portland, OR.

In Portland, Judy graduated from Reed College and worked as a Forest Service grunt, pizza maker, and as a staff member in a women’ health collective. Then she found herself at Portland's renowned Powell’s Books. Judy worked there, as a book buyer and manager, for 14 years. It was during this long stint that Judy and coworker Bill McRae realized that some of the books they were selling would look a lot better with their names on them.

In addition to Moon Zion & Bryce, Judy is also the coauthor of several other guidebooks with Bill McRae, including Moon Utah, Moon Oregon, Moon Coastal Oregon, and Moon Montana. When not writing about the outdoors and travel, she is the lead technical writer and editor at Camp Dusty Technical Services, where her specialty is copyediting a wide variety of scientific journal articles. She lives with her husband and dog in Portland, where they enjoy swimming, yoga, skiing, gardening, and cooking.
