Some of the best Anchorage breads and pastries come from Europa Bakery (601 W. 36th Ave., 907/563-5704), where the rustic thick-crusted artisan breads compare favorably to anything you might find in Europe. Similarly noteworthy breads and sweets can be found at L’Aroma Bakeries, inside both New Sagaya stores.
Marty’s New York Bagel Deli (901 E. Dimond Blvd., 907/336-1315, www.martysnybd.com, $7–8) makes the city’s most authentic bagels and bagel sandwiches. And oy vey, the owner really is from New York.
Alaska Wild Berry Products (907/562-8858 or 800/280-2927, www.alaskawildberryproducts.com) has a large chocolate factory and gift shop on Juneau Street near the corner of Old Seward Highway and International Airport Road. This is a fun place for chocoholics; there’s even a 20-foot melted-chocolate waterfall, and free taste samples. Fifteen-minute tours are given throughout the day, and this is a very popular stop on the Anchorage tour-bus circuit. The big gift shop offers all the standard tourist stuff (and then some), while the theater shows a unique 30-minute film ($8) about Alaska.
