Sitka Black-Tailed Deer

These small deer are found throughout Southeast Alaska, in Prince William Sound, and on Kodiak and Afognak Islands. Visitors to all these areas may occasionally see deer, but some of the largest populations are on Kodiak Island. The deer population averages more than 300,000 individuals but fluctuates widely, depending upon the severity of the winter.
They’re the second-most-prevalent game animal in Alaska behind caribou. They prefer a forest environment, but also roam high into the mountains for young shrubs and ripe berries in the late summer months. Males weigh 120 pounds, females 80 pounds.
