Homer is just above sea level, and it might even rain in January, but surrounding hills often pile high with snow. Kachemak Nordic Ski Club (907/235-6018, www.kachemaknordicskiclub.org) maintains 22 miles of groomed cross-country trails near McNeil Canyon (13 miles east of town), at Baycrest (just west of town off Sterling Hwy.), and at Lookout Mountain (out on Ohlson Mountain Rd.). The last of these has the best snow and most adventurous trails. Check the website for current conditions and the grooming status.
Also popular in the winter are snowmobiling and ice skating on Beluga Lake. Located halfway out on the Spit, the Homer Ice Arena (907/235-2647, www.homericerink.com) is open for skaters and hockey players throughout the fall and winter.
