Icy Strait Point
In the last decade Hoonah plunged into cruise ship tourism. The picturesque cannery building at Port Frederick (Icy Strait Point, 907/945-3141, www.icystraitpoint.com) has been restored, and cruise passengers (plus a few independent travelers) get a look at the way canneries operated in the 1930s.
There are Native cultural presentations, whale-watching excursions, kayaking, charter fishing, mountain biking, and the real attraction: Ziprider ($100), the world’s longest cable ride. It starts with a bus ride to the top of the mountain behind town. Then you buckle into a seat for a 60-mph blast that plummets down the slope. This exhilarating ride only lasts 90 seconds, but it seems like an eternity if you’re afraid of heights.
Icy Strait Point is generally open Sunday–Wednesday in the summer, and when cruise ships are in port.
