Downtown Skagway is made up of seven blocks on Broadway, along which are most of the sights. The ferry terminal is at the bottom of Broadway; a three-minute hike and you’re in the heart of beautiful downtown Skagway.
Skagway Tours
Given the influx of tourists to Skagway, it’s no surprise to find a multitude of tour options. The most unique local tours are aboard the canary-yellow 1920s vintage White Motor Company cars run by Skagway Street Car Company (907/983-2908, www.skagwaystreetcar.com). The complete two-hour trip costs $42 ($21 children), but most seats are pre-sold to cruise ship passengers. To be sure of a spot, book at least two days in advance. This is one of the few Alaskan guided tours that I’d actually recommend.
A number of other companies also offer van tours around the area; get their brochures at the visitors center. These typically cost $30 for a three-hour trip that includes the town of Skagway and White Pass Summit; some take an alternate route to the Chilkoot Trailhead and Dyea, or a longer trip into Yukon.
Skagway Carriage Company (907/723-3117) provides a completely different sort of tour: horse-drawn carriage rides around town. Just look for the carriages on Broadway.
