Kenny Lake Mercantile (907/822-3313, www.kennylake.com) has groceries and gas, a diner with three meals a day, austere lodging, a wooded RV park ($24), a coin laundry, and showers. It’s at Mile 7 on the Edgerton Highway, 26 miles west of Chitina.
Find considerably nicer accommodations at Wellwood Center B&B (Mile 6, 907/822-3418, www.wellwoodcenter.com, $114–135 d) with three guest rooms and private or shared baths. Make your own breakfast in the stocked kitchen. The home occupies a 95-acre spread with hiking trails leading to mountain vistas.
Golden Spruce Cabins (Mile 10, 907/822-5556, www.goldensprucecabins.com, $75 d) has five comfy year-round cabins with a shared bathhouse, plus an espresso stand and a convenience store.
Pippin Lake B&B (907/822-3046, www.pippinlakebnb.com, $150 d plus $10 per additional guest), at Mile 82 on the Richardson Highway near the Edgerton turnoff, has a cozy lakeside cabin that sleeps five. The kitchen is stocked for a make-it-yourself breakfast, and a canoe, kayak, and paddleboat add to the allure.
At Copper Moose B&B (Edgerton Hwy. Mile 5.8, 907/822-9244 or 866/922-4244, www.coppermoosebb.com, $135 d), four guest rooms share three baths in a large log home. Full breakfasts are included, and you can take in the Wrangell Mountains from the deck while surfing the Web with free Wi-Fi.
