Drumheller

The small city of Drumheller (population 8,000) is set in a spectacular lunar-like landscape in the Red Deer River Valley 138 kilometers (86 miles) northeast of Calgary. Paleontologists from around the globe come to Drumheller and its environs to learn more about the prehistoric animals that roamed the earth millions of years ago.

For tourists, the Royal Tyrrell Museum is definitely the highlight of a visit to Drumheller, but there are many other diversions along the valley. Downtown itself is a little rough around the edges, but has been bought to life in recent years with the addition of dinosaur sculptures and murals.
