Some 153 kilometers south of Esquel, Gobernador Costa is a cow town with the best services on the long haul between Esquel and Río Mayo on RN 40 (south of here, the paved route becomes RP 20, while graveled RN 40 veers west through Alto Río Senguer).

Lago General Vintter, on the Chilean border via graveled westbound RP 19, is popular for fishing.

Accommodations and Food

North of the highway, the Camping Municipal (US$1 pp) has hot water (US$1 per shower) and electricity.

Hostería y Parrilla Mi Refugio (Avenida Roca s/n, tel. 02945/49-1097, US$37 d) has firm, comfortable beds but is ragged around the edges. Its restaurant serves pretty good versions of Argentine standards.

Across from the tourist office, El Petiso (Avenida Roca s/n) is best for beef.

Other Practicalities

The helpful new Oficina de Informes (Avenida Roca s/n, tel. 02945/49-1004) is open 9 a.m.–8 p.m. daily.

Banco del Chubut (Sarmiento and San Martín) has an ATM.

The bus terminal has services northbound to Esquel, eastbound to Trelew, and southbound to Sarmiento and Comodoro Rivadavia.
