Surfing
Cabo San Lucas proper is not a surf destination, though the action isn’t far away by car. In summer there is surf along the Corridor, and in winter the closest waves are north along the Pacific near Todos Santos.
Kayaking
Playa El Médano is calm enough most of the time for launching kayaks easily, and you can rent from a number of vendors along the beach for US$10 per person per hour or US$50 for a half day.
The water is calmest in the morning, and it takes about 40 minutes to get to Playa del Amor, so it’s best to get an early start. Beware of larger watercraft on the bay, and if you are a beginning paddler, stick close to the beach, regardless of the conditions.
ATVs and Personal Watercraft
When you’ve had enough of the water, you might begin to explore the area’s kilometers of open beaches and inland attractions via ATV (not permitted near swimming or turtle-nesting areas). A number of outfitters offer these tours, and any hotel or activity stand along the marina can make a reservation. Current prices are around US$60 per person single/US$80 double.
Baja’s Activities (tel. 624/143-2050, www.bajasactivities.com) has locations at the Hilton, Tesoro, and Villas de Palmar hotels, plus an outpost on Highway 19 on the way to Playa Migriño. It allows two riders per ATV at a discounted rate.
Amigos Moto Rental (tel. 624/144-4161) rents ATVs for US$25 per hour or US$120 per day. Guided tours of Migriño Beach and/or Candelaria cost US$70–90 for a single rider.
On a calm day, a WaveRunner or Jet Ski can be a fast and fun way to explore the bay and Playa del Amor, and you don’t have to be a speed demon to enjoy the ride. A number of vendors along Playa El Médano offer rentals for around US$40 per half hour.
Horseback Riding
Several stables offer horseback tours along Playa El Médano and into the mountains nearby. The going rate is about US$30 per hour. Red Rose (La Rosa) Riding Stables (Km. 4, across from Cabo San Lucas Country Club, tel. 624/143-4826) offers custom trips and lessons.
Rancho Collins (Camino Viejo a San José, tel. 624/143-3652, 8 A.M.–noon and 2–6 P.M. daily), across from Club Cascadas, has 45 horses that are healthy and in good shape. Look for a pretty palomino near the road or book through your hotel.
Skydiving and Parasailing
Look for Skydive El Sol (tel. 624/129-7173, www.skydiveelsol.com, daily year-round), a relative newcomer to Cabo San Lucas, near Club Cascadas on Playa El Médano. The going rate is US$250 for a tandem jump that includes one minute of free-fall time. Plan on a two-hour outing from start to finish. For an additional US$130, you can return home with a video and photographs of the entire experience. Skydive El Sol needs at least two jumpers to book a trip.
The Caborey luxury cruise ship (tel. 624/143-8260, www.caborey.com) offers parasailing trips at a rate of US$35 for an 8- to 10-minute ride. Just beyond the Cabo San Lucas city limits, the 300-hectare Cabo San Lucas Country Club (Km. 3.7, Carr. Transp., tel. 624/143-4653 or -4654, toll-free U.S. tel. 888/298-1132, www.golfincabo.com, US$79–200) is one of the more reasonably priced courses in Los Cabos. There are many other more exclusive and more expensive options along the Corridor. Cabo Mind Body Fitness offers Pilates and Bikram yoga sessions in the privacy of your own villa, but prices are correspondingly steep: Pilates sessions run US$125–225 per person per hour (or US$45 pp per hr. for groups of seven or more). Yoga classes cost US$110–160 per person per hour (or US$30 pp for groups of 10 or more). Discounts apply for pairs and triples, too, so it pays to buddy up. Visit www.cabovillas.com for details. Most of the larger Cabo resorts have their own spas on site. One of the nicest is the Armonia Spa (Playa El Médano s/n, tel. 624/142-9696, www.pueblobonito.com) at the Pueblo Bonito Pacifica resort, which offers 50-minute massage treatments for US$110. Choices include hot stone, Shiatsu, four-hands, deep-tissue, Swedish, and pregnancy massage. Located in the basement of the hotel, the spa setting is a bit cave-like but quiet and peaceful, with a friendly and professional staff. To find the resort and spa, follow the main street through Cabo San Lucas (Lázaro Cárdenas), past the plaza and up the hill. The road will curve to the right and back to the left, and the name will change to Boulevard Herrera. Keep going up the hill about a kilometer and a half until you reach a stop sign with the Pueblo Bonito entrance and sign on the left. Currently, the sign says Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach, but this is also the entrance for the Pueblo Bonito Pacifica.
