South of Vizcaíno Junction, Highway 1 begins to curve eastward on its way to meet the Sea of Cortez at Santa Rosalía. The drive presents views of the expansive Desierto de Vizcaíno to the west and the majestic Sierra de San Francisco to the east, with peaks up to 5,216 meters.
In the middle of all this scenery is a spring-fed oasis surrounded by palms and the small colonial town of San Ignacio. Beyond the desert on the Pacific coast is the gray-whale sanctuary of Laguna San Ignacio.
