If you want to take home something a bit different from the regular China souvenirs (chopsticks, fans, silk dressing gowns, jade statues), try Xing Mu’s Handicrafts near Houhai.
The shop specializes in handcrafted notebooks bound in leather of various colors and textures, filled with special brown paper called niupi. It also offers a range of card-backed books decorated with Peking opera masks, goldfish designs, and dragons, as well as hemp products.
Xing Mu has many imitations around town, but it is the original and the best. All items are fixed price (no haggling), but the prices are very reasonable for the quality and craft.
