Located inside a grand building that was the clubhouse during People’s Square’s days as Shanghai’s racetrack, before gambling was outlawed, Kathleen’s 5 is run by serial restaurateur Kathleen Lau.
It’s a popular choice for pre-theater meals overlooking People’s Park and serves a range of European food like pasta, steak, and salad for brunch, lunch, and afternoon tea.
Ask for a table on the patio or the glass-enclosed terrace depending on the weather. A daily happy hour 5:30-7:30 p.m. features half-price drinks.
As the restaurant’s name suggests, it is Kathleen Lau’s fifth project. Its predecessors include the popular brunch spot KABB in Xintiandi. Kathleen is an ardent supporter of gay rights and her restaurants often host LGBT events.
