Get your Mao memorabilia and propaganda posters at the Dongtai Road Antiques Market. While most of the items on display have a history no longer than a couple of years (decades at the very most), there are some great, quirky items to be had if you have the time to browse.
The market is laid out across an axis of four narrow pedestrian streets that meet in the middle. Some specialize in old alarm clocks, some in beat-up suitcases, and some in carved wood. Others sell vintage photographs, ceramic statues of Mao, and every permutation of jade and wooden statuary. There’s also Yunnan-style fabric, fans, and typical Chinese souvenirs.
Be prepared to bargain.
