Historic Military Buildings

A scattering of historic military buildings once used by the British Army can still be seen around the Fort Hill–North Shore area. At Prospect, former military barracks today belong to Police Headquarters, where the complex of buildings is used for executive offices, cadet training, media relations, and traffic squad police offices. An Edwardian officers’ mess with views of Hamilton and the Great Sound is now the Police Recreation Club.
On Fort Hill, the Prospect Cemetery contains the graves of soldiers posted on the island through the 19th and 20th centuries. Farther north, where Orange Valley meets Palmetto Road, an old military hospital, like the barracks displaying hallmark iron verandas, is now a government office building overlooking the North Shore.
