Paget kid-pleasers include Botanical Gardens, Paget Marsh, picnics and wading along Pomander Road, and boat-watching at Red Hole.
Children will adore the ducks and parakeets at Botanical Gardens, in enclosures behind Camden House (other, free ducks roam the lawns). Camden’s grassy hills are great for tumbling, and the lawns invite impromptu games of football or hide-and-seek. On the western side of the Gardens, gargantuan ficus and rubber trees with hollow insides—the kind that inhabit fairy tales—serve as make-believe treehouses. Kids of all ages will want to walk inside, climb their low branches, and swing on the hanging roots.
There is also a maze garden here. Directly opposite Camden, there are more ducks to feed and follow on the Tucker property, a vast estate owned by the Tucker family, who open the lawns to catch football games and Saturday morning kids’ soccer practices. Visitors are welcome to stroll the lawns and inspect the natural canal under a roadside rubber tree, where the ducks hang out with fleets of ducklings in the spring.
As always, beaches often make for the best play areas, and Paget’s Elbow Beach will not disappoint with its soft sand and easygoing surf. In addition, the three-day Bermuda Annual Exhibition at Botanical Gardens is a must-see if you’re vacationing in April.
