Children adore WindReach Recreational Village (57 Spice Hill Rd., Warwick, tel. 441/238-2469, fax 441/238-2597, www.windreach.org/bermuda), a nine-acre oasis with an air-conditioned activity center, petting zoo, sensory trail, campground, and fully accessible playground and picnic area. The facility promotes activities for people of all ages with disabilities and special needs, but has become a regular destination for all children on the island. The zoo, with its menagerie of guinea pigs, goats, parrots, miniature horses, rabbits, donkey, and lamb, is especially popular. The playground, a shady, tree-house-style set-up of slides, swings, stairs, and ramps under a giant poinciana, is also a must-visit. Wheelchair-accessible bathrooms are on-site. Tours and visits must be booked in advance.
Warwick Playground (South Shore Rd., east of Warwick Long Bay), one of a half dozen government-owned venues around the island, is a favorite among expat moms and nannies, though its lack of breeze or ample shade makes it almost unbearable throughout the summer. Run by the Parks Department, the dog-free playground is kept scrupulously clean and well maintained, with soft white sand surrounding equipment suitable for kids of all ages, from infants to middle-schoolers. Swings, slides, tunnels, poles, rope ladders, and a wooden fort and train are among the equipment. Kids also enjoy feeding and chasing the resident flock of chickens. A portable toilet and ample parking are available. A path on the playground’s southern edge leads down to beachside parkland and Warwick Long Bay.
