Celeiro (Rua Dias Ferreira 199, Leblon, tel. 21/2274-7843, www.celeiroculinaria.com.br, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Mon.–Sat., R$20–30) is a classic vegetarian eatery that is an institution for Leblon’s body-conscious residents. It all started in the early ’80s when the Herz sisters couldn’t keep up with the demand for their carrot cake, which they sold at a São Conrado beach barraca. Teaming up with their mother, they opened their own restaurant. Aside from healthy baked goods, they began concocting salads—such as chicken and cashew, and white bean and sun-dried tomato—made with organic products supplied from regional farms. Today, on any given day, there are over 50 fantastic salads, served on a per kilo basis, along with soups, snacks, and desserts.

Equally appetizing are the organic offerings at the tiny Vegetariano Social Clube (Rua Conde de Bernardote 26, Loja L, tel. 21/2294-5200, www.vegetarianosocialclube.com.br, noon–midnight Mon.–Sat., noon–6 p.m. Sun., R$15–20), which opened when a group of health-conscious pals from Leblon decided to do something about the lack of hard-core vegan restaurants in the hood. Choose from buffet or à la carte options, which include pizzas and tofulettes (eggless omelettes). To drink, there are lots of organic juices and even caipirinhas made with organic cachaça or sake. Saturday’s tofu feijoadas have a large vegetarian following.
