Housed in a creamy brick mansion with a pretty veranda and a warmly furnished lounge, Carlota (Rua Sergipe 753, Higienópolis, tel. 11/3661-8670, www.carlota.com.br, noon–4 p.m. Tues.–Fri., 7 p.m.–midnight Mon.–Thurs., 7 p.m.–1 a.m. Fri., noon–1 a.m. Sat., noon–6 p.m. Sun., R$50–60) is owned and operated by one of Brazil’s most innovative contemporary chefs, Carla Pernambuco. Although she hails from churrasco-famous Rio Grande do Sul, Pernambuco’s trademark dishes feature unusual multicultural combinations of flavors and textures, such as grilled jumbo shrimp with fresh asparagus, shiitake mushrooms, and cashew rice. Her eponymous dessert is a warm petit gâteau of bananas served with cinnamon ice cream.
