Museu Lasar Segall
Although not well known outside of Brazil, Lasar Segall is one of the country’s most singular modernist artists. A large portion of his paintings, drawings, and engravings can be seen at the Museu Lasar Segall (Rua Berta 111, Vila Mariana, tel. 11/5574-7322, 2–7 p.m. Tues.–Sat., 2–6 p.m. Sun., free), where he lived and worked from 1932 until his death in 1957.
Born in Lithuania, Segall delved into German expressionism before immigrating to São Paulo, where he was seduced by the color palette and textures of his tropical surroundings. This lovely museum provides a great introduction to his colorful universe.
