Performing Arts
Taking in a concert or dance performance at the landmark Teatro Amazonas (Praça São Sebastião, Centro, tel. 92/3622-1880, www.teatroamazonas.com.br) is an unforgettable experience. It’s worth the price of a ticket merely to soak up the sumptuous ambiance. However, Manaus’s opera house draws an impressive roster of talents from all over Brazil and the world. Monday night performances are free.
Also worth checking out is the Centro Cultural Usina Chaminé (Av. Lourenço da Silva Braga, Centro, tel. 92/3633-3026), an artfully renovated sewage plant with a beautiful interior that hosts art exhibits as well as music and dance performances.
Festivals and Events
Every year, from late April through May, the Festival Amazonas de Ópera, attracts a lineup of big-name national and international soloists who perform a mixture of classical operas and Brazilian compositions in the magnificent Teatro Amazonas. The schedule of performances and tickets are available at the teatro several weeks in advance (see Sights).
