In keeping with the primitive environs, Jericoacoara’s pousadas are all appropriately rustic, although many proprietors have ingeniously taken advantage of organic materials and regional artistic traditions to create ambiances that are quite seductive. In the tiny village of Jeri itself, Pousada Ibirapuera (Rua da Dunas 6, tel. 88/3669-2012, www.pousadaibirapuera.com.br, R$120–150 d) is one of Jeri’s original pousadas and offers good value. The air-conditioned rooms consist of small lofts with a bedroom upstairs and living room downstairs. The brick buildings are softened by a lush garden festooned with hammocks, shady cashew trees, and a curvy blue pool. Windsurfing boards are available for rent.

Just a few steps from the beach, Pousada Calanda (Rua das Dunas, tel. 88/3669-2285, www.pousadacalanda.com, R$70–130 d) is a very friendly and mellow option with a lovely rambling garden filled with fruit trees, hammocks, and colorful throw pillows. Rooms are pretty basic, but cheery. The home-cooked meals are downright delicious. Amenities include a small pool, 24-hour bar, and Internet.

It’s close to impossible to get more primitive chic than Vila Kalango (Rua das Dunas, tel. 88/3669-2289, www.vilakalango.com.br, R$250–350 d). Tarzan and Jane never had it this good. Nestled right on the beach, accommodations are divided between rustic brick bungalows and wooden huts suspended on stilts, all of which are creatively and beautifully decorated with natural fibers and ingeniously recycled objects. This is one place where you’re actually encouraged to track around sand—in fact, a wonderful lounge of hammocks, pillows, and futons is located in a soft patch. Moreover, the beauty of the pool, restaurant, and palmy grounds—all of which overlook the Duna do Pôr-de-Sol—will have you pounding your chest in delight.
