At Fort Steele Heritage Town (9851 Hwy. 93, 250/417-6000, daily 9:30 a.m.–6:30 p.m. June–Sept., $5 per person, or pay adult $25, senior and child $15 for two days’ admission and all activities), 16 kilometers (10 miles) north of Cranbrook, you’ll see more than 60 restored, reconstructed, fully furnished buildings, including log barracks, hotels, a courthouse, jail, museum, dentist’s office, ferry office, printing office, and a general store crammed to the rafters with intriguing historical artifacts.
In summer, the park staff brings Fort Steele back to life with appropriately costumed working blacksmiths, carpenters, quilters, weavers, bakers, ice-cream makers, and many others. Hop on a stagecoach or a steam train, heckle a street politician, witness a crime and testify at a trial, pan for gold, watch a silent movie, and view operatic performances in the Opera House.
