If you’re craving fresh seafood but want to esacpe the touristy wharf, head to the Monterey Fish House (2114 Del Monte Ave., 831/373-4647, daily 11:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m. and 5–9:30 p.m., $15–25) where the local go for cioppino and grilled oysters. The tiny dining room ensures its social atmosphere.
