Skip the big chains and head for Java Jones (728 State St., 805/962-4721, daily 7 a.m.–11 p.m.), conveniently located in the middle of State Street. This local coffee house has brick walls, cushy couches in the upstairs loft seating area, and local art on the walls. It’s also got a better-than-average selection of caffeinated go-juice, including Turkish coffee and Vietnamese coffee.
In the morning, locals and visitors alike can order from the limited but tasty breakfast menu. Pastries and salads are available all day and late into the night. Go ahead and bring your laptop (yup, they’ve got Wi-Fi), grab a chair, and settle in.
