Perched between scenic Lake Siskyou and its own 18-hole golf course, the Mount Shasta Resort (1000 Siskyou Lake Blvd., 800/958-3363, www.mountshastaresort.com, $195) offers attractive lodgings and on-site sports to its guests. For a budget vacation, stay in one of the motel-style Woodland Rooms, each of which has a private bath with shower and two queen beds, making it perfect for families or couples traveling together.

For a more private luxury experience, book one of the lovely individual chalets. Some of these sit right down by the lake, so you’ll hardly ever want to leave your own front porch. Chalets can have private bathrooms, one or two bedrooms (sleeping up to six people), and full kitchens to make staying for a week or more a pleasure.

For more standard motel-style accommodations, check in to the Mt. Shasta Inn and Suites (710 S. Mt. Shasta Blvd., 530/918-9292, www.mtshastainn.com, $225–375). They’re not unique, but the king, two-queen, and family suites here offer lots of space and the comfort of familiar surroundings. You’ll get a standard-issue motel bathroom, a TV, a phone, and a good location central to town and close to both I-5 and Highway 89. An all-year outdoor hot tub welcomes weary sportsters after a long day out on the mountain or in the woods and lakes. The family suites are actually adjoining king and two-queen suites, offering sleeping spots for six people comfortably and two separate bathrooms.
