Once upon a time, Pasadena was the resort haven of wealthy East Coasters. To revisit this wealthy past, stay at The Bissell House Bed & Breakfast (201 Orange Grove Ave. S., 626/441-3535, www.bissellhouse.com, $225–400) on “Millionaire’s Row.” The tall mint-green Victorian surrounded by the deeper green of lush mature landscaping opens its doors to well-heeled travelers who want a luxurious place to stay while they’re in the L.A. area. It is named for one of its residents, Anna Bissell McCay, heiress to the original Bissell vacuum cleaner fortune.
Each of the five rooms has a unique decorating scheme, yet each shares a European floral theme that binds the inn together into a coherent whole. Guest rooms have comfy beds, a luxurious bathroom (most have clawfoot tubs), and lots of wonderful amenities, and the property has a swimming pool with a hot tub and lots of lovely plants scattered about. Your room includes a full breakfast each morning, served at the long table in the downstairs dining room.
