For a genuine, locally beloved, and cheap sushi spot, try Sushi Mac (2222 Sawtelle, 310/481-9954, daily 11:30 a.m.–9 p.m., $2.50/plate, cash only). Before you order, read the laminated signs on the walls to learn the rules of engagement. Every plate of sushi costs precisely $2.50, whether it’s two pieces of nigiri or eight slices of a freshly made roll.

The decor is nothing to write home about, but the ever-frantic chefs will slice and dice their way right in front of you. It might not be the biggest or most creative sushi, but you can get your fill for about half the cost of most other sushi spots. Be aware that Sushi Mac can get crowded with locals on weekdays at lunchtime. However, they’ve got another location at 8474 West Third Street.
