A surprisingly cute little brick-fronted café, the Angelique Café (840 S. Spring St., 213/623-8698, Mon.–Fri. 8 a.m.–3:30 p.m., Sat.–Sun. 8 a.m.–4 p.m., $7–20) offers a relaxed French atmosphere and good French-styled food. The original chef-owner came from France and brought his recipes and his dining aesthetic with him. The large menu has an array of both French and American dishes, going heavy on the salads and more traditional hot fare.
If you come for breakfast, you can choose from a list of omelets and crepes plus a few American egg dishes, or the more traditional continental breakfast of pastry and coffee. Angelique’s small green-and-yellow dining room is open for breakfast and lunch only. If it’s a nice day, grab a table outside on the wrought-iron fenced patio, which has almost as many tables as the inside dining room does.
