San Diego seems littered with gorgeous high-end resort hotels, and the Mission Bay area is no exception. One of the nicest of these is the Catamaran Resort (3999 Mission Blvd., 800/422-8386, www.catamaranresort.com, $355). Garden rooms and studios, which have one or two beds, stylish decor, and top-tier amenities (plus full kitchens in the studios), can have surprisingly reasonable rates. The premier rooms—bayfront rooms and suites—have grand views of the ocean, some with direct access right down to the Catamaran’s own private beach.

A great reason to stay at the Catamaran, the private beach runs to a private pier with a water-sports rental facility that can hook you up whether you prefer high-powered, wind-powered, or human-powered watercraft. (Windsurfing is a favored activity on Mission Bay.)

For younger guests, the Mad Scientist Kid’s Camp and Catamaran Kids Club keep children occupied and happy while their parents enjoy the sea, the spa, or the private comforts of their hotel room.

Also on-site you’ll find the Atoll Restaurant, which serves three meals a day and a sumptuous champagne brunch on Sunday mornings and early afternoons.
