You’ll find plenty of first-run multi-screen cineplexes scattered throughout the San Diego area. But if you’re looking for a fun vintage movie-going experience, try the Ken Cinema (4061 Adams Ave., 619/819-0236). Built in 1946, this single-screen theater now specializes in running independent and foreign films. You can also attend the Gay and Lesbian Film Festival at the Ken each year.

Happily, the seats are not the same vintage as the rest of the theater—new, comfortable theater chairs were installed in 2004. There’s no parking lot, so you’ll have to try your luck on the street with the locals who come to the Ken regularly to see something other than the standard new Hollywood fare.

If you’re in La Jolla and looking for fun and unusual film entertainment, head up to the La Jolla Village Cinemas (8879 Villa La Jolla Dr., 619/819-0236). This four-screener shows a variety of different styles of movie, from independent to foreign to popular. Enjoy better-than-average concessions, plus an array of good food and drink centered right around the theater.

If you’re looking for a midnight movie experience, call and see if they’re running something while you’re in town.
