Looking for some comfortable, warm Italian food without high prices or pretenses? Go where the locals go: Filippi’s Pizza Grotto (1747 India St., 619/232-5094, www.realcheesepizza.com, Mon.–Thurs. 11 a.m.–10:30 p.m., Fri.–Sat. 11 a.m.–11:30 p.m., Sun. 11 a.m.–10 p.m., $10–15).
Walk through the tempting Italian market at the front into the dimly lit restaurant at the rear of the building. Enjoy the classic atmosphere, complete with red-and-white-check tablecloths.
Order a pizza, some lasagna, or a giant meatball sandwich. Pastas come with classic and uncomplicated marinara and the pizza might be the best in all of San Diego.
Best of all, Filippi’s serves late into the evening—until almost midnight on weekends. You’ll definitely have to jostle with the local crowd for a seat on Friday and Saturday nights.
You can find Filippi’s locations in other parts of San Diego County, but the original is this Little Italy location.
