Need more naval history? Visit the USS Midway (910 N. Harbor Dr., 619/544-9600, www.midway.org, daily 10 a.m.–4 p.m., adults $15, seniors/students $10, children $8). This carrier, which dates to the period just after World War II, served as an active part of the U.S. Navy through Desert Storm in 1991.
Onboard, you’ll get to roam throughout the ship, checking out everything from fighter planes to the enlisted mess to the dreaded brig as you climb narrow metal steps from deck to deck. One of the best parts of a trip to the Midway is the opportunity to talk to the docents, many of whom are veterans who served aboard the ship during the Cold War, Vietnam, or Desert Storm.
Consider taking one of the docent-guided tours if you’re interested in the realities of life aboard an aircraft carrier. The self-guided audio tour also makes a good introduction to the ship, after which you can check out the flight simulators, linger near the exciting aircraft, or head to the café and gift shop at the stern.
Parts of the ship are wheelchair accessible and there are restrooms onboard.
