Serving some of the most famous sourdough in the City, the Boudin (Pier 39, Space 5-Q, 415/421-0185, www.boudinbakery.com, $6–8) is a Pier 39 institution. Grab a loaf of bread to take with you, or order in one of the Boudin classics. Nothing draws tourists like the fragrant clam chowder in a bread bowl, but if you prefer you can try another soup, a signature sandwich, or even a fresh salad.
For a more upscale dining experience with the same great breads, try Bistro Boudin (160 Jefferson St., 415/351-5561, Mon.–Fri. 11:30 a.m.–9:30 p.m., Sat.–Sun. 11 a.m.–9:30 p.m. $19–39).
