This small winery harkens back to the Napa of decades past. The intimate tasting room at Cuvaison (4550 Silverado Trail N., Calistoga, 707/942-6266, www.cuvaison.com, Apr.–Nov. daily 10 a.m.–5 p.m., Dec.–Mar. Sun.–Thurs. 11 a.m.–4 p.m., Fri.–Sat. 10 a.m.–5 p.m., $10–$15) doesn’t hold busloads of tourists and the bar might show a few scars, but the tasting room staff know quite a bit about the wine they’re pouring and they want to tell you all about it.
The quaint building sits on the slope of the mountains bordering Napa Valley and shelters several friendly cats. A picnic area invites a longer stop to enjoy the vineyard views with your lunch and a nice bottle of Cuvaison Chardonnay, or just to relax and sip one of their light, tasty reds.
