Kaz Vineyard and Winery
At the other end of the spectrum from the multi-thousand barrel-making big boys of Wine Country, there’s Kaz (233 Adobe Canyon Rd., Kenwood, 877/833-2536, www.kazwinery.com, Fri.–Mon. 11 a.m.–5 p.m.). This tiny winery is a family affair from start to finish—in the vineyards, the winery, and the tasting room. Inside Kaz, you’ll find a broad array of ultra-small-production wines—sometimes only one barrel of a particular wine gets made.
Reds are the Kaz specialty, including a number of blends and unusual varietals you just don’t see at other Sonoma wineries. (Think Mouvedre, Grenache, and Barbera-Tannat blend.) Kaz also makes several unique ports—even whites and rosés! Inside the simple brown barn that’s been made over into a tasting room, you’ll get 6–9 tastes for $5, and if you’re lucky, Kaz himself will be pouring and commenting on his wines.
