One of the largest of these parks’ giant sequoia groves, the General Grant Grove (one mile northwest of the Kings Canyon Visitor Center) is home to dozens of monumental trees. The largest of these is the General Grant Tree, the third-largest tree on earth, an American National Shrine, and “America’s Christmas Tree.”
Another feature of this area, the Fallen Monarch was once an immense tree but now acts as a tunnel along the trail, with enough head room for almost the tallest of visitors to get through without ducking. The walk among the sequoias at all stages of development is easy, with a well-built flat half-mile trail (much of this area is wheelchair accessible).
Consider purchasing a trail guide at the nearby visitors center, because the circuitous trail can be difficult to follow and you may find yourself lost in the beautiful forest trying to find its star attraction.
