Oxkintok Archaeological Zone

Oxkintok (8 a.m.–6 p.m. daily, US$3) doesn’t have the wow factor of better-known ruins, but it’s a beautiful, well-maintained site that can make an extra day on the Puuc Route rewarding.

The site is big and varied, with pyramids, plazas, and palaces scattered amid high grass and trees. Best of all, you’ll probably have it completely to yourself. The ruins sit in a fertile plain at the edge of the hilly Puuc region and may have been connected to Uxmal by a limestone sacbé.

Oxkintok has attracted a fair amount of attention in the past few years, as archaeologists uncover an urban center at least three square miles. Tombs have been found in a number of the structures, though many of the artifacts were lost to looters. To reach Oxkintok, follow the signs eastbound from Highway 180. Consider combining a visit here with a tour of the Calcehtok caves.
