The best overall campground in town is at the well-managed and never overcrowded Skidaway Island State Park (52 Diamond Causeway, 912/598-2300, www.gastateparks.org, $2 per vehicle daily parking fee, $24 per night tent and RV sites, $35 per night for group camping). There are 88 sites with 30-amp service. A two-night minimum stay is required on weekends and a three-night minimum for Memorial Day, Labor Day, Independence Day, and Thanksgiving. Despite these restrictions, the natural beauty of the park and its easy access to some great nature trails make it worth the price.

There’s one campground on Tybee, the River’s End Campground and RV Park (915 Polk St., 912/786-5518, www.cityoftybee.org). Owned by the city of Tybee Island itself, River’s End on the north side of the island offers 100 full-service sites plus some primitive tent sites. During Tybee’s sometimes-chilly off-season, you can relax and get warm inside the common “River Room.” There’s also a swimming pool and laundry facilities. Basic water and electric sites are $34 per night, while 50-amp full hook-ups with water and electric are $45.

Totally wilderness camping can be done on state-owned Little Tybee, accessible across the Back River by boat only. No facilities.
